Despite all the hype, there are some serious flaws in Padmaavat, and this review will attempt to explain why it is not a must-see film. This Hindi film is not a historically accurate movie and it portrays both sides of the conflict in a completely biased way. While it does portray both the king and the queen with a degree of realism, it also paints Muslims as carnivores.
That is not a new idea, nor is it a particularly sympathetic portrayal, but it echoes the right-wing Hindu view of Muslims. That’s right – this Hindi movie is extremely prejudiced and rife with tacky cliches. Even worse, it embeds these cliches in responsive frames.
Shahid Kapoor
In Shahid Kapoor’s Padmavat movie review, we are enchanted by the beauty of Deepika. While she plays the title role with grace and beauty, the film’s other stars add depth and nuance to their roles. Shahid is magnificent as the ruthless Rajput king Ratan Singh, and Deepika is equally beautiful and talented.
As the villain of the film, Ranveer Singh plays the Afghan ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, Alauddin Khilji. His performance reveals him as a monstrous character, while Jim Sarbh’s character plays his slave Malik Kafur and Aditi Rao Hydari plays his wife, Mehrunisa.
Deepika Padukone
Whether you like the royal family or not, you will certainly enjoy Deepika and Ranveer Singh’s superb performance in this epic period drama. The film begins with a spellbinding hunting scene that sets the stage for the movie’s operatic story. After the hunt, the Queen strikes a blow to Raja Ratan Singh, who is both love-struck and determined to protect his wife.
The film is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has been known to capture palace intrigue in previous films. Deepika Padukone has been previously seen as the second wife in Bajirao Mastani, and here she plays the queen in Padmaavat.
Ranveer Singh
While the movie’s cast is solid, it lacks consistency and caution. Ranveer Singh plays the wily king, Alauddin Khilji, with little caution or consistency. The character is so flawed that his only moments of humanity come from a victory in chess and snuffing out a man’s life with his armpit. In the end, however, there’s very little to like about this movie, which is disappointing considering the excellent background score and cinematography.
Ghoomar
A medieval Indian sultan attacks the prosperous kingdom of Padmavati and attempts to capture the beautiful queen. Queen Padmavati’s husband, Maharawal Ratan Singh, rallies a valiant army to defend his land and honor. The film is an action-packed adventure that will have audiences cheering for more! This movie is a must-see for all fans of historical fantasy movies!
CGI
This is a brief Padmaavat movie review. Although I am not a huge fan of computer-generated effects, I did enjoy the sweeping battle scenes and the beautiful landscapes. The story itself is fascinating and the performances are excellent, but there’s little that elevates this film over the rest of the year’s best movies. The movie is also not without its flaws. While the cinematography is excellent, the over-the-top 3D effects detract from the experience.
