Andy Serkis’ performance in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
The ape performances are top-notch. They have natural movements and intense eyes, and they really do put a lot of emotion into their speech and sign language. Toby Kebbell’s performance as the scheming Koba is a good one, too, as he charts the ape’s rise to power and eventual fall from grace. This film does not feature much slapstick dialogue, which is refreshing.
The story follows a few years after Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The human race has been wiped out by a deadly virus, and the apes have set up an orderly community in the Redwood Forest. The apes are ruled by Caesar, a revered leader, and Koba is his second in command. Together, they communicate with each other in sign language, and Caesar has taught them all the basic rules of their society. However, in a desperate attempt to survive, the humans come into conflict with humans.
Sequel to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
The Sequel to the first movie builds on its success with great visual effects, performances, and action. Unfortunately, the human characters are rather one-dimensional. While Gary Oldman plays the only complex character, his lack of personality and constant stupidity leave much to be desired. However, the movie has some redeeming qualities, including a good storyline and a compelling ape character named Caesar.
The Sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a much better film than the original, which had some of the same themes and visual effects. While the film has some problems, it is still a solid Sci-Fi movie. Matt Reeves and Rick Jaffa have remade the original film into an exceptional sequel. Combined, the film is one of the best offerings in the genre this year. It’s frightening, gripping, and has a thoughtful tone that makes it a great movie.
Review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
A sequel to a classic movie, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was a huge hit when it was released, but the follow-up falls short of its own potential. While using CGI as the basic tool, the film is sorely lacking in character development and shades of gray. Most characters are either good or bad, faceless and easily swayed. While the movie is a solidly entertaining PG-13 summer blockbuster, its shortcomings make it a less than stellar choice.
The film takes place in the future, when apes are finally able to form a civilization. While the movie keeps to its symbolic themes and shows how much humanity has changed and how much humans have changed, it does so with a dark undercurrent of fear and anger.
