Then a statue of Vishwakarma is placed in the centre and the tools used in everyday work are offered to him along with sweets and water. Vishwakarma Puja 2024 Date
On the last day of Bhadra (September on the Gregorian calendar), Hindus celebrate the birthday of the divine carpenter, Vishwakarma. A god of architecture, Vishwakarma is credited with the design of Dwarka where Krishna ruled and he is also believed to have constructed the celestial abodes of the gods and created their weapons. As a deity of mechanics and tools, Vishwakarma is worshiped by all engineers and craftsmen as well as those who work with machines.
Vishwakarma Jayanti is an important Hindu festival dedicated to the divine carpenter and architect of the universe. It is observed predominantly by engineers, architects, craftsmen, and industrial workers.
They clean and decorate their factories, workshops and tools and worship them to seek the blessings of Lord Vishwakarma for success in their profession. The day is considered a holiday for them and free lunches are organised in several places.
Who is Lord Vishwakarma?
According to Hindu scriptures, Vishwakarma is the divine draftsman of the universe and he is the official builder of all gods’ palaces, their flying chariots and their weapons. He is also credited with the construction of celestial abodes including Indra’s Swarga in heaven, Ravana’s Golden Lanka in the Treta Yuga and Dwarka in the Dwapar Yuga and the magnificent cities of Hastinapur and Indraprastha in the Kali Yuga.
The god of architects and craftsmen, Lord Vishwakarma is usually depicted as a bearded man wearing a royal garment and carrying a variety of tools such as a hammer, a compass, a plumb bob and a set of blueprints. His physical appearance symbolizes his wisdom and creativity and the tools he carries symbolise his skills. Besides being the presiding deity of all craftsmen, Lord Vishwakarma is the patron god of engineers and all professionals including industrial workers, technicians and smiths. He is also worshipped by all those who own and maintain a home or an office or any immovable property.
Legend has it that Lord Vishwakarma once constructed a palace made of gold for Lord Shiva and Parvati to perform the Grihapravesh ritual. Ravana, who was a huge fan of Shiva and Parvati, visited this magnificent abode and got completely awestruck by its beauty and grandeur. As a gesture of gratitude, he asked Lord Shiva for anything as dakshina and Shiva granted him the coveted Golden Lanka.
