Sanjay Leela Bhansali has a reputation for delivering cinematic masterpieces, and Alia Bhatt’s performance in Gangubai Kathiawadi is impressive.
Pandit Birju Maharaj
The story starts with the demise of the corrupt and shady Don Gangubai, a gangster who gets reincarnated in a brothel. During his second life, Gangubai rises from the muck and becomes a red-light district kingpin. With the help of his best friend, powerful don Rahim Khan, and courageous journalist Amin Faizi, he succeeds in getting the presidency of Kamathipura. The movie ends with Gangubai saving a young girl from a household and going on toève with the school kids.
The film is a beautiful, romantic and uplifting story of love and loss, with some heartwarming moments. The performances were superb, with the lead actors displaying a variety of styles and techniques. In addition, Panditjji is a master of Kathak dance, and his choreography of the Aan Milo Sajana song is classic, yet has a contemporary twist.

With the passing away of the late legend, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has decided to dedicate his upcoming film, Gangubai Kathiawadi, to Lata Mangeshkar. This film tells the story of the rise and fall of a simple girl from Kathiawad and her destiny. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has also cast Ajay Devgn and Vijay Raaz in this film.
This film looks decent on the technical side. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is well-known for his lavish sets and attention to detail. He’s done a good job in showcasing the small town of Kamathipura. This movie’s climax is an attempt by the locals to build up the town of Kamathipura, but the editing is far from perfect.

However, if you’re a cinephile or have seen Bhansali’s previous work, you’ll no doubt be intrigued by Gangubai Kathiawadi’s complex premise and stellar cast. It’s set in the early 1950s and spans 15 years, centered around Gangubai, a young woman who moved to Mumbai and was sold to a brothel by a lover. She eventually runs her own campaign for political office and focuses on women’s rights. However, her father has died and she doesn’t forgive Gangubai for running away.
The writing in Gangubai Kathiawadi is excellent, and the second half is gripping. Hussain Zaidi is a journalist and author, and his writings have been adapted by several filmmakers for the big screen. Other successful adaptations have included Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday, Sanjay Gupta’s Mafia Queens of Mumbai, and Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi.
